Design rainfall modelling in the Thames catchment

چکیده
Abstract This paper examines methodologies for the simulation of storms for the purpose of design flood generation in the Thames region. Existing methods are reviewed and two new approaches are proposed. One combines point profiles of storms extracted from long rainfall records with depth-duration-frequency statistics. The other uses a stochastic rainfall model based upon the Poisson point process to generate data. Rainfall events simulated by these two methods are compared and the flood statistics obtained by inputting these events into a rainfall-runoff model are examined for a small catchment in Surrey, England. The Poisson based model is recommended as the more reliable.

a Comparison Study Between the Joint Probability Approach and Time Series Rainfall Modelling in Coastal Detention Pond Analysis (RESEARCH NOTE)
In tidally affected coastal catchments detention pond should be provided to store flood surface water. A comparison between the full simulation approach based on the joint probability method and time series rainfall modeling via the annual maximum of pond level was undertaken to investigate the assumptions of independence between variables that are necessary in the joint probability method. The...
متن کاملA probability distribution function approach to modelling rainfall–runoff response for data-sparse catchments
A rainfall–runoff (RR) model considering the spatial variation of rainfall, soil infiltration capability and soil storage capacity over a catchment and based on probability distribution functions, is used for rainfall–runoff modelling. The model combines infiltration excess (Horton) and saturation excess (Dunne) mechanisms. Moreover, it is applied to a data sparse catchment. Model parameters of...
متن کاملModelling metaldehyde in catchments: a River Thames case-study.
The application of metaldehyde to agricultural catchment areas to control slugs and snails has caused severe problems for drinking water supply in recent years. In the River Thames catchment, metaldehyde has been detected at levels well above the EU and UK drinking water standards of 0.1 μg l-1 at many sites across the catchment between 2008 and 2015. Metaldehyde is applied in autumn and winter...
متن کاملInvestigating the application of rainfall simulator for designing micro-catchment systems
Rain simulators are suitable tools for research related to the process of erosion and runoff. However, it is possible to use these simulators on other topics as well. For example, in designing the rainwater catchment systems such as micro-catchments for planting trees on slopes, curve pits in pastures, and determining the size of the water collection pond, knowledge of runoff coefficient and vo...
متن کاملApplication of Satellite-Based Precipitation Estimates to Rainfall-Runoff Modelling in a Data-Scarce Semi-Arid Catchment
Rainfall-runoff modelling is a useful tool for water resources management. This study presents a simple daily rainfall-runoff model, based on the water balance equation, which we apply to the 11,630 km2 Lesser Zab catchment in northeast Iraq. The model was forced by either observed daily rain gauge data from four stations in the catchment or satellite-derived rainfall estimates from two TRMM Mu...
